Learning to play jazz is often compared to learning a new language. In my teaching, I help immerse students in the jazz language. Together, we listen to great jazz musicians, analyze their techniques, practice in meaningful ways, and play together. The process is interactive and fun, and I enjoy seeing students understand, apply, and internalize new concepts. By listening to music and working with students, I also continue to learn.
Here are some ideas that I share with student musicians in lessons and clinics. I hope you find them to be helpful.
